“I wanted to be a bit higher up the grid, to be honest, especially considering how competitive we looked yesterday, but when you consider everything that has happened, we’re not in bad shape. We had to switch back to the older spec power unit this morning and we were not able to push the engine as much as we would have liked. Even so, we are in good shape for the race and it’s clear we’ve made some improvements to the car this weekend. It won’t be easy in the race because many of the cars around us are quick, but it’s quite an easy track on which to overtake so there’s more opportunities compared to some other tracks.”

“I would say we can be happy today. After yesterday we didn’t expect to have any pace today, but on the other hand, you do have it in mind that things can turn on their heads overnight because these tires, for us at least – as we all have the same tires, it’s very difficult. We don’t seem to be able to work the tire in the right way for whatever reason, I don’t think it’s a lack of tire knowledge really, because I’m not sure anyone completely understands these tires, I think it’s just something somewhere in our car that doesn’t suit them. It can make all the work you do in the background a little bit irrelevant, as you can turn around with different results every day, every session. It’s a little bit frustrating, but today going P10, starting P8 tomorrow, we’ll take that.”

“We got the best of the car today, both drivers, so that’s great. Since the beginning of the weekend we haven’t really been comfortable with the car. I think this weekend has showed some of the weakness we have, but that’s good as we have a very clear vision of where we need to go for the future – that’s the positive part. On the more negative side, I think our race pace isn’t there, so I’m a bit worried for tomorrow. We have an issue with tire usage, not because of the tires – we know they have limitations, but when you don’t have the downforce to go with it, it just makes things worse. Hopefully the changing weather will be to our advantage.

We knew before the weekend it was going to be a very different story to Hungary. It was a bizarre qualifying, I was only able to get one lap in due to the red flags in the session. It is how it is, and we will make the most out of it. We will be starting higher up the grid due to penalties, but it will still be a tough race.

“Going into qualifying knowing you have an engine grid penalty is never ideal, but we achieved what we needed to, which was to beat our competitors who also have engine penalties. Q3 was a possibility considering our pace, but we made the decision not to go out again in Q2 so that we can start the race on new tyres. It wouldn’t have been too pleasant starting near the back of the grid on old tyres! It looks as though there are some other cars that had engine issues during qualifying so maybe we will gain another couple of positions too. It would have been great to have had a normal qualifying session, charging to get as far up the grid as possible, but as a team we made the right decision to think of the race tomorrow. I’m also feeling positive about the car in general because we have definitely made progress this weekend. We’ve been competitive since first practice and hopefully we can carry this momentum forward into the rest of the season.”

I felt a lack of power on the back straight, but there was no strange noise. At first, I thought it was a deployment issue, but then I realised in the mirror that there was smoke. Unfortunately, that’s how it is in motorsport, it can happen. It’s a big shame because some other cars are taking grid penalties, so we could maybe have started further up. Now it’s important to evaluate what happened and move forward.
